School Board Update, February 29, 2008

Dear neighbors,

This is one last reminder that I will hold a campaign event this Sunday, March 2, at Speeder’s (on Pine Street) from 9-12 a.m.  I hope that it will be a good time and place to meet with any of you who have questions about the school board and/or my plans for the next two years if re-elected as your Ward 5 school commissioner.

I am a Champlain Elementary and Burlington High School mom, a St. Michael’s College professor, and I have served on the Board for three years.  At this exciting time, I believe I have the experience, demonstrated commitment, and leadership skills to represent Ward 5 well as the Board continues its work on planning and implementing excellent, equitable, green, and smart 21st century schools.

Those of you who have been on the Front Porch Forum for a while know that I am a regular contributor, keeping South End residents informed about what’s going on at the school board, and letting you know about opportunities for your voice to be heard.

During the three years that I have represented Ward 5, I served on the task force that studied obstacles facing children from low-income families, chaired the communications committee that explained the findings of the task force to the city, and helped gather responses and reactions from more than 1,000 Burlingtonians. I currently chair the Board’s curriculum committee, which has researched magnet programs, and promoted expanded enrichment in all our schools, including world languages, hands-on science opportunities, music lessons, sustainable ecology, arts, and athletics.

I believe the District is moving in a great direction with magnet schools that will balance our demographics at the elementary level and bring exciting new choices to families in Burlington (and those considering moving here). With your continued support, we can make Burlington a destination district that helps all of our children, and the city itself, to reach its potential.  If re-elected, I will continue to offer a balance of listening, consensus-building, and leadership as your representative.  For more information, please check out my website www.amywerbel.info, or feel free to send me an e-mail at awerbel@bsdvt.org, or call 802-660-4918.

Stay warm, and please vote yes on the school budget,

Amy Werbel
